Instacart says New Yorkers are more likely to buy this candy than people in other states

Halloween is coming, and that means trick-or-treaters, but there’s no trick-or-treating without candy.

How do you know which sweet treats the children in your neighborhood will like best? Should you stock up on Milky Ways and leave the Twizzlers at the store? Do you have leftover Kit Kats and not enough Skittles?

Instacart determined each state’s favorite Halloween candy based on grocery orders in October 2023 and an online Harris Poll survey.

Based on the research, these are the most popular Halloween candies in New York and other states.

This is New Yorkers’ favorite Halloween candy

New York’s favorite Halloween candy is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and New Yorkers aren’t alone.

According to Instacart, there are only six states that don’t support chocolate peanut butter.

Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska all gave M&M’s the top spot, and while Reese’s didn’t top the list ahead of Idaho and Utah, those two states stuck with the same flavor combination and chose Peanut M&M’s as their favorite.

New Yorkers buy this candy more often than people in other states

In addition to each state’s favorites, Instacart also identified New York’s most unique popular candy. New Yorkers purchase Ferrero Rocher hazelnut chocolate 141% more often than the national average, the third highest percentage in this category.

Florida has the highest percentage in this category, purchasing the Milky Way Dark bar 248% more than the national average.

Missouri ranks second in this category, purchasing Tootsie Rolls 166% more than the national average.

Which US state has the biggest sweet tooth?

Utah has the highest rate under this category at 19.4%, and Hawaii has the lowest at 10.5%.

New Yorkers did not make the top five in this category. The state’s taste for sweets fell 12.3% to the bottom of the list.
