For federal employees and companies that observe federal holidays, New Year’s Day is a holiday that gives people a chance to start 2025 quietly.
According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, there are twelve federal holidays scheduled for 2025, including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
Because it is a federal holiday, many businesses and government offices are closed that day. This is what you can expect.
Is New Year’s Day a federal holiday?
New Year’s Day, which falls on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, is a federally recognized holiday, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
That means normal government agencies and offices will be closed in observance of the holiday, as will many other non-governmental businesses.
Is the post office open on New Year’s Day?
The post office will not deliver mail on New Year’s Day, which means that there will be no regular mail deliveries or collections from the blue collection boxes.
A limited number of UPS locations will be open on New Year’s Day and UPS Express Critical will be available for delivery. FedEx will be closed on New Year’s Day with the exception of Custom Critical service.
Is the stock market open on New Year’s Day? Banks?
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are not open on New Year’s Day and banks are closed.
Are the courts open on New Year’s Day?
New Year’s Day is a holiday observed by the courts, which is why they are closed that day in Rhode Island.
