The United Nations plans to include Israel and Hamas in the global list of entities accused of violating the rights and protection of children.
A UN spokesperson confirmed to AP News that Israeli authorities have been informed of this decision.
The announcement comes ahead of the UN Secretary-General’s submission of the UN annual report to the Security Council next week Antonio Guterres will add Israel and Hamas to the annual global list of countries and groups that violate the rights of children in armed conflict.
Other countries on the list include Russia, Syria, Yemen, Myanmar and Iraq.
Thousands of Palestinian children have been killed during Israel’s invasion of Gaza, which began after the October 7 terrorist attacks on Israel by Hamas and other militants. although estimates of the precise number vary.
The decision has further strained relations between the UN and Israel, which have deteriorated since the Israeli military campaign in Gaza began following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7.
