At least 15 people have been killed by Israeli airstrikes on two former schools housing displaced people in northern Gaza, the coastal strip’s civil defense force said on Thursday.
The Israeli military said on Telegram that the former schools were now being used as command and control centers by the Islamist Hamas militia to plan terrorist attacks. It said it had deliberately attacked the buildings.
It added that it had taken numerous measures to reduce the risk to civilians before the attacks.
The statements made by both parties could not be independently verified.
The Gaza War was sparked by the massacre of about 1,200 people and the kidnapping of about 250 others in Israel by Hamas and other militias on October 7, 2023.
More than 45,100 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the conflict, according to Palestinian figures on Thursday. The figures do not distinguish between militants and civilians.
