October 4 is World Pet Day and while there are many pets in Louisville ready to be pampered, there are dozens of dogs, cats and other animals waiting for a chance to find love in their forever homes in shelters across the city.
World Animal Day, which follows the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the global celebration recognizes animal rights and welfare worldwide. According to World Animal Protection, awareness and education can put an end to ‘the needless suffering of all animals’.

Adoptable dogs, cats and horses from the Kentucky Humane Society
The Kentucky Humane Society has many adoptable dogs, cats and horses. The organization also relies on foster parents to save “thousands of lives” and considers them an “integral part of that success,” according to their website. Volunteers are also welcome.

Adoptable pets from Louisville Metro Animal Services
Louisville Metro Animal Services has found homes for “thousands of pets through free and donation-based adoption programs” and says that when you adopt, you are “saving a homeless pet from your community.”
According to the organization, “pet ownership comes with a lot of responsibility, and it is a long-term commitment,” and it’s important to be ready before considering adoption. LMAS also welcomes foster parents and volunteers.
