“But this is a defendant who begs for a prison sentence by bringing a flamethrower, not just to the judge, but to the entire trial and jury,” Comey said. “A judge will take that into account very seriously when deciding whether he should deter this person and send out the broader message that he should spend a while behind bars.”
Trump will be sentenced on July 11 by Judge Juan Merchan. Merchan, the judge’s family, as well as witnesses in the case, were often the targets of Trump’s ire over the course of the proceedings — and it’s likely Merchan will take that into account in sentencing former President Comey , speaking to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. said.
Comey said the personal attacks, as well as Merchan’s finding that Trump acted in contempt of the court’s orders on multiple occasions, “will all be part of the picture that the judge looks at to decide whether there should be a notice being sent that carries with it a prison sentence.”
