TOKYO (Reuters) – Unions at major Japanese automakers will seek monthly wage increases of 12,000 yen ($79.15) or more during annual spring wage negotiations next year, the union group said on Wednesday.
This is the first time in seven years that the group, the Confederation of Japanese Automobile Unions, has presented a specific target for labor negotiations.
The group decided to revive the de facto goal of providing guidelines that smaller unions, such as those representing component manufacturers, can use in their negotiations, executives told a news conference.
The group has twelve unions, including the Toyota Motor Workers’ Union, under its umbrella, with a total of 784,000 employees.
Japan’s largest labor group, Rengo, which has the auto union group under its umbrella, is aiming for wage increases of at least 5% by 2025, similar to this year’s big increase.
