Jensen Huang reveals ‘Nvidia has no long-term strategy’ or plan. The reason behind this is the same: why he isn’t wearing a watch

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, shared something surprising during a Fireside Chat at the CASPA 2023 annual conference. He said Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) doesn’t have a long-term plan. This may sound strange coming from the leader of a Big Tech company, but Huang had a simple reason: focus on the present.

Don’t miss:

Huang said that in both his personal life and in running Nvidia, he doesn’t believe in emphasizing long-term plans. In fact, he’s not even wearing a watch – on purpose. This choice reflects his belief that the most important moment is now. This mentality, he says, has made Nvidia successful, from graphics cards to artificial intelligence. Instead of worrying about the future, Nvidia is working to solve today’s problems as best it can.

This way of thinking has made Nvidia important in gaming, AI, robotics and even climate modeling. Huang explained that if you plan too far ahead, you can miss what’s happening right in front of you. For Nvidia, this means staying flexible and willing to jump on opportunities as they arise – something that has worked well since they adapted to meet the needs of fields like digital biology and AI.

“We don’t have a long-term strategy,” Huang said. “Our definition of a long-term plan is: what are we doing today?” By focusing on the present, Nvidia has led in areas like AI and accelerated computing, where traditional computing has not kept pace.

Just because there isn’t a strict plan doesn’t mean Nvidia doesn’t have direction. Instead, it means that they are always learning, changing and adapting based on what is happening right in front of them. Huang said this approach is why Nvidia continues to push boundaries, especially with technologies like CUDA, which many initially doubted but ultimately changed computing technology.
