Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s home was burglarized while Cincinnati was beating the Dallas Cowboys on “Monday Night Football.”
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the burglary to local media in Cincinnati. Police were called to Burrow’s home in the Cincinnati suburb of Anderson Township around 8 p.m. local time on Monday for a report of a burglary.
Authorities provided no further details about the burglary. Neither Burrow nor the Bengals had discussed the news publicly as of early Tuesday afternoon. WLWT in Cincinnati obtained a recording of 911 calls related to the burglary.
“Someone is trying to break into the house right now,” an unknown caller said. “My daughter is there. This is Joe Burrow’s house. She’s staying there. He’s at the football game.
‘She wonders what to do, whether to hide or go outside. She said someone was in the house.”
Another caller identified by WLWT as the daughter referenced in the initial 911 call also called 911.
“Someone broke into my house,” she said. “It’s like it’s all messed up.”
Homes of athletes are repeatedly targeted by burglars
The burglary occurred amid a series of high-profile burglaries targeting professional athletes, some of which also occurred while they were playing games. The burglaries have led to warnings from the NFL and NBA to their players.
An NFL memo in November to teams and players warned that homes of professional athletes “have increasingly become targets for burglaries by organized and experienced groups.” The NBA warned its players the next day that the FBI had linked the burglaries of athletes’ homes to “allegedly highly organized, sophisticated rings involving advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones and signal jamming devices.”
In October, the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were reportedly burglarized. Mahomes’ home was reportedly broken into just after midnight on Oct. 6, a Sunday before the Chiefs played the New Orleans Saints at home on Monday night. It is unclear who was home at the time of the burglary.
Kelce’s house was broken into during Kansas City’s game against the Saints. The back door was damaged and $20,000 in cash was stolen, according to a police report cited by the Kansas City Star.
Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis Jr.’s home was burglarized in the NBA. and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley. Portis’ home was burglarized during Milwaukee’s Nov. 2 home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Portis revealed that “several valuables” were stolen during the burglary.
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Conley’s home was broken into and robbed of jewelry while he was attending a Vikings home game on September 15.
