Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the US Open due to a persistent foot injury

PINEHURST, N.C. – A persistent toe injury has forced Jon Rahm out of the 2024 U.S. Open. Rahm announced his withdrawal from X late Tuesday afternoon:

“After consultation with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided that it is best for my long-term health to withdraw from this week’s US Open Championship,” Rahm wrote. “To say I am disappointed is a huge understatement! I wish all my colleagues the best of luck and would like to thank all the USGA staff, volunteers and Pinehurst community for hosting and putting on what I am sure will be a great event his championship! Hopefully I’ll be back in action as soon as possible!”

Rahm, the 2021 US Open champion, indicated during his press conference earlier Tuesday that he was suffering from the effects of an infected lesion on his left foot. “It’s a concern. He’s getting better. He’s getting better. But he’s definitely still in pain,” he said, wearing a slipper on his infected foot.

The injury forced Rahm to withdraw from the LIV Golf event in Houston last weekend, raising concerns about his ability to compete in this week’s US Open.

“I don’t know how or what happened, but it got contaminated,” Rahm said. “The pain was severe. During the Saturday round, Saturday morning, I was given an injection to numb the area. It would last the entire round, and by my second hole I was already in pain.

“The infection was the worrying part,” he added. ‘The infection is now under control, but there is still swelling and pain. There’s a reason I walked out here in a shoe and flip flops, trying to keep the area dry and try to get that to heal as quickly as possible. But I can only do what I can. The human body can only work so fast.”
