JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon has called for federal workers in Washington, DC, to return to their offices, drawing attention to the ongoing debate over remote work policies.

What happened: During his speech at the Atlantic Festival, Dimon expressed frustration about the number of empty buildings in the capital, Business Insider reported Friday.

“By the way, I would put Washington, D.C., back to work. I can’t believe when I come here, the buildings are empty. The people that work for you, they don’t go to the office,” he said,

“That bothers me,” he added. Dimon stressed that he does not allow flexibility at JPMorgan.

Don’t miss:

Why it’s important: Dimon is not alone in his stance. Earlier this week, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) CEO Andy Jassy announced that Amazon employees would return to the office five days a week, matching pre-pandemic norms.

JPMorgan’s policy requires managing directors to be in the office full time, while other employees must work in person at least three days a week. Last year, the Biden administration also urged federal employees to return to work in person.

Despite these efforts, many federal employees still have flexible work arrangements. Some Environmental Protection Agency employees only have to be in the office four days a month. Other agencies, such as the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of the Interiorrequire a minimum of 50% office attendance.

Office vacancy in DC remains high, with about 22% of office space vacant in the second quarter of 2024, according to CBRE. Federal government and private sector offices are contributing to this trend.
