Judge orders teen’s arrest for murder of mother in South Shore home

A 17-year-old boy accused of killing his mother was arrested Saturday after prosecutors reported an unprovoked shooting at the family’s South Shore home.

The teenager, Davion Pryor, was identified by his father as the person who shot his 43-year-old mother, Tatanisha Jackson, to death Thursday afternoon at her home in the 6800 block of South Cornell Avenue, authorities told a Cook County judge during a custody hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Pryor was charged as an adult with first-degree murder in connection with Jackson’s death after he turned himself in to a police station in the 7000 block of South Cottage Grove on Thursday night. He told officers he knew police were looking for him, according to court documents.

Prosecutors said Pryor shot his mother four times in the head at close range without provocation. Jackson was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The Cook County coroner’s office ruled her death a homicide.

In ordering Pryor’s arrest, Judge David Kelly ruled that Pryor, who was under electronic monitoring at the time of the shooting in connection with a pending case against a minor, was unwilling or unable to comply with conditions that did not amount to detention.

The judge has allowed the teen to receive treatment while in custody for an unspecified mental illness. Pryor is due back in court next Friday.
