Democrats gather in Chicago for the start of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), where Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be officially nominated as the party’s candidates for the 2024 presidential election, where they will face Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.
Harris has enjoyed a stunning surge in popularity since Joe Biden made his historic decision a month ago not to seek a second term in the White House, stepping aside and endorsing his deputy as his successor after his disastrous performance in the debate against Trump in Atlanta on June 27.
Now that the party has endorsed Harris, she has risen in the polls and has broadened her appeal by adding Walz to the candidate list. These events have left Trump and Vance confused. They seem at a loss as to how best to respond to the new challenge they face.
This week’s four-day convention will build to Harris’ speech on Thursday night, with Biden, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and Adam Kinzinger all scheduled to address delegates.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up as activists demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger and former first lady Michelle Obama are the latest big names added to the DNC speaker lineup.
You may be less familiar with the former than the latter: Kinzinger, a former U.S. Air Force pilot who flew missions in South America, Afghanistan and Iraq, voted for Trump in 2020 but emerged as a prominent critic of the outgoing president after the Capitol riots. He broke ranks to vote for a historic and unprecedented second impeachment trial against him, then served on the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack.
He subsequently declined to seek re-election and resigned in January 2023 after 12 years in the role, representing Illinois’ 11th and then 16th districts. He now describes himself as a “Proud RINO,” which stands for “Republican In Name Only.”
