Kansas City gets a break from storms. Will they return for Memorial Day weekend?

A change in weather is expected in the Kansas City area as mild and drier conditions will prevail throughout the region, but storms threaten to return over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

A few light hail showers are possible Wednesday morning, but a clearing spell will lead to nice weather with temperatures in the mid-70s, which is typical for this time of year in Kansas City. The weather service said any rain that falls should only be a few hundredths of an inch.

Thursday’s weather will start off sunny and dry, allowing temperatures to return to the low 80s. There is a chance of some isolated showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon.

According to the weather service, the better chances for thunderstorms will occur Thursday into Friday morning as a cold front moves through the metro area.

Severe to severe thunderstorms are possible as a cold front passes. The biggest problem are wind gusts of almost 60 km/h. The weather service said the main uncertainty in the forecast is whether a line of storms will hold as they cross from eastern Kansas into western Missouri.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed Kansas City at a marginal risk of severe weather. Areas west of the metro are at greater risk.

The weather on Saturday will be mostly sunny, with temperatures in the low 80s. Rain and thunderstorms may return during the night and the chance of precipitation is 60%.

According to the weather service, Sunday appears to be a “favorable day for heavier precipitation.” The storms are expected to continue into the afternoon. The temperature will be around 80 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 60% and drops to 30% at night.
