Katie Ledecky and Kate Douglass lead the US women’s swimming rankings for Olympic Trials

Katie Ledecky, Kate Douglass and Regan Smith combine to lead the 2024 U.S. women’s swimming rankings in 11 of the Olympic swimming program’s 14 individual events on probation.

During the trials – June 15-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis – the top two individuals from each event are expected to make the team for Paris.

It is likely that the top six in the 100 and 200 freestyles would be eligible for relay purposes if the total U.S. roster does not consist of more than 26 women.

All the top candidates to make the team participated this season. Everyone trains to swim as fast as possible during trials, but the season-to-date rankings are an indication of placement.

SWIMMING TESTS: Broadcast schedule

Ledecky has been the fastest American in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and 1500 meters free every year dating back to 2014, with the exception of the 1500 meters free in 2016, a year in which she did not race that distance.

Her biggest challengers were traditionally in the 200 meters free time. At last June’s national championships, Claire Weinstein became the first American in nine years to beat Ledecky in a 200-meter free final.

Ledecky also left the individual 200 meters out of her program at world championships the past two years, despite being named to the team for the event. She hasn’t revealed what she’s planning to do this summer, so it’s possible she’ll only swim in meets to show she deserves a spot on the Olympic 4×200-meter free relay.

Douglass made her Olympic debut in Tokyo at the age of 19 in one event, winning bronze in the 200-meter individual medley.

This year she is the top-ranked American woman in four events – the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle, the 200-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter IM – but she may not swim them all at trials due to a busy schedule.

Douglass has become perhaps the most versatile swimmer in the world. In January, she broke the American record in the 200-meter breast. In February she broke the American record in the 50 meter free time.

Smith is the American record holder in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke and the 200-meter butterfly. At her Olympic debut in Tokyo, she won silver in the 200-meter fly and bronze in the 100-meter back.

The dominance of Ledecky, Douglass and Smith leaves three events in 2024 with different American leaders: 2016 Olympic gold medalist Lilly King in the 100-meter breast, 2022 world champion Torri Huske in the 100-meter fly and two-time silver medalist Katie Grimes in the 400 meters. I AM.

In total, the American record holder is expected to compete in 11 of the 14 events.
