Kroger union workers ratify new contract with higher wages and better benefits

(CBS DETROIT) – Union workers at Kroger in Michigan have ratified a new contract that increases wages, improves paid time off and improves working conditions.

A member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951 has approved a new three-year contract, effective June 30, according to a news release.

The union represents 30,000 employees, more than 1,000 of whom work at Kroger.

“We fought hard for significant wage increases and an overall improved contract for Kroger members,” said Courtney Phillips, secretary/treasurer of UFCW Local 951. “I am proud of the members who served on the bargaining committee and worked together to secure contract wins that will improve the lives of their fellow members.”

The new contract provides an immediate pay increase of up to $1.50, along with several other improvements, including more paid leave for employees hired after 2008 and with 18 years of service.

“Our commitment to our team goes beyond providing excellent wages and benefits, including healthcare and retirement benefits, and improving career paths for our dedicated team members,” said Ken DeLuca, President of the Kroger Michigan Division. “As a major employer in Michigan, we pledge to consistently provide our community with accessible and reasonably priced fresh groceries and essential products.”

Specifically, more than $8 million is being invested in employee health care and more than $500,000 in pension provisions.

“I think overall it’s going to have a really good impact on employees and their families, especially with the health insurance package and keeping that cost down for employees,” said Richelle Anderson, an employee at the Kroger store in Okemos who served on the bargaining committee. “That’s huge for us!”
