Los Angeles is celebrating America’s naval services this Memorial Day weekend with the 7th LA Fleet Week.
The multi-day event takes place in San Pedro in the Port of Los Angeles, and this year the public tour ships include a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and a U.S. Coast Guard response cutter.
Lt. JG Joseph Osueke of the US Coast Guard said the sailors and skippers on the ships are ready to greet the public.
“We will have some static displays this weekend. We will have some crew on board, and they will be able to talk and converse,” Osueke said.
“Let’s have fun this weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone in the local community.”
In addition to ship tours, the celebration also includes military demonstrations, equipment demonstrations, live entertainment, airplane flights, a Galley Wars cookoff competition, a dodgeball game, and performances by military bands throughout LA.
Fleet Week is billed as the largest Memorial Day event in Southern California, and it’s all free.
The main exhibit location is open daily from 10am to 6pm, next to the battleship USS Iowa, at 250 S. Harbor Blvd.
Viewing the ships
Open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Memorial Day, May 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- USS Carl VinsonHomeported in San Diego, it is the third nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class and one of only eleven operational aircraft carriers in the Navy.
- Terrell Horne, Fast Response Cutter (FRC) is located in San Pedro. This cutter is the third of four planned FRCs to be based in the Port of Los Angeles.
