September 23 – BEMIDJI – Beltrami County will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking for its
new prison
on Wednesday, September 25 at 12:00 noon on the southeast corner of 815 Pioneer Street SE.
The event marks the official start of construction on the $80 million complex, which will replace the region’s aging prison.
The decision to build a new prison follows a 2019 mandate from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, which called for significant improvements to the current facility.
Funded through a local option sales tax of 0.625% and
approved by county voters in November 2023,
The new facility will prioritize improved safety for both staff and inmates and will offer enhanced rehabilitation programs aimed at reducing recidivism.
