Lead water pipes are being replaced in Dundee

DUNDEE — The Village of Dundee recently received a $325,335 grant to verify and possibly replace 227 water mains. Plumb lines are replaced via the program.

Dundee was one of several communities in Michigan to receive the Community, Technical, Managerial and Financial Support Lead Line Replacement grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE). Other nearby locations to receive grant funds included the villages of Blissfield and Waldron.

“The grant covers service line verification, public outreach and education, and project planning documentation and development,” said Dundee Village Manager Michael Hoffmeister.

The village will inspect and verify approximately 227 residential and commercial water lines where lead is suspected or where the pipe material is unknown but likely contains lead, according to the office of Sen. Joseph Bellino Jr., R-Monroe.

“We won’t know how many need to be replaced until they are inspected and verified,” Hoffmeister said. “The goal is to complete the verification and any necessary replacements this warm season. The contracts have been signed and we are looking at scheduling our pre-construction meeting.”

The old lead pipes are replaced by pipes made of high-density polyethylene (HDP).

“This is now the type of pipe that is primarily used for water mains,” Hoffmeister said. “We are pleased to have received this grant and are looking forward to getting started. We will certainly communicate with all residents as the project progresses.”

According to Bellino’s office, the Michigan Legislature passed the Community, Technical, Managerial and Financial Support Pipeline Replacement Grant Program in 2022.

“Under Public Act 166 of 2022, the Legislature appropriated $48 million for a grant program to provide technical, administrative and financial community support for lead pipe replacement,” Bellino’s office said. “The overall purpose of the grant program is to fund physical verification of lead service lines for submission of the Complete Distribution System Materials Inventory required under the 2018 amendments to the Lead and Copper Rule and to assist communities in utilizing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Drinking Water State Revolving Fund dollars for lead pipe replacement.”
