One person died Wednesday evening after a commercial bus crash in Lansing, Kansas, Lansing Police Chief Steve Wayman said.
Officers responded to the intersection of Kansas Highway 7 and 4H Road for a reported crash just before 7 p.m. According to a preliminary investigation, a motorcoach was traveling south on K-7, or Main Street, when a sedan attempted to turn left at the intersection.
The sedan collided with the bus, causing significant damage to both vehicles, Wayman said. The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wayman said no other injuries were reported in the crash.
The road was closed for about five hours on Wednesday as emergency services worked to clear the accident scene. Part of what took so long was finding a towing service that could transport the coach, Wayman said.
Wayman said the bus had to be towed so highway patrol could conduct a commercial vehicle inspection of the bus as part of the investigation into the crash.
“Getting a towing service big enough to transport that bus; there are only a few in the Kansas City metro that can handle that,” Wayman said.
Police have not yet publicly identified the victim.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
