Lenawee Christian senior is one of four Michigan students to win a MEC scholarship

Lenawee Christian senior is one of four Michigan students to win a MEC scholarship

CASSAPOLIS — A Lenawee Christian High School senior was one of four Michigan students to receive funding through Midwest Energy and Communications’ annual scholarship program.

Alexandra Prater received a $1,000 scholarship from MEC in recognition of her academic achievements, leadership and community involvement.

Scholarship applicants were asked to select one of MEC’s ​​three core services — electricity, propane and fiber-optic internet — and create a commercial promoting it with any creative or artistic touches they could think of, according to an announcement from MEC. Children of MEC employees and board members were not eligible to apply.

Alexandra Prater, a senior at Lenawee Christian High School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by MEC in recognition of her academic achievement, leadership and community involvement. She was one of four students from Michigan to receive a scholarship.

At LCS, Prater participated in gymnastics and the National Honor Society. She also tutored fellow students and volunteered for the school’s annual dinner and auction to support academic scholarships and special projects.

Outside of school, MEC said, Prater has volunteered at the local animal shelter and the Devils Lake Festival for the Arts. She has worked as a youth gymnastics coach and as a dishwasher.

She wants to study political science at the University of Alabama.

Other 2024 scholarship winners include Abbey Dobberstein, a senior at Dowagiac Union High School; Joseph Creagan, a senior at Decatur Jr./Sr. High School; and Kodi Jones, a senior at Edwardsburg High School.

Midwest Energy & Communications is a customer-owned electric cooperative founded in 1937. The company provides electricity, propane and fiber optic internet solutions to rural customers in southern and west-central Michigan, northern Indiana and northeastern Ohio.

The company is expanding internet services in southern Michigan to bring fiber to an additional 50,000 customers by the end of 2026. For more information, visit teammidwest.com.
