Little Twist fire at 2,600 acres after warm, dry weather causes ‘very active fire behavior’

BEVER, Utah (ABC4) – Hot and dry weather conditions on Saturday caused officials to focus on containing the Little Twist Fire near Beaver, rather than continuing with their planned firefighting efforts for the day.

“Weather has made all planned manual or air ignition operations impossible, which will be postponed until weather conditions improve,” Utah Fire Info said in a news release. Sunday morning update.

On Saturday, officials said more smoke was visible from roads and communities around the Tuhar Mountains until mid-evening.

Although the fire showed “very active fire behavior” on Saturday, officials were able to prevent the fire from growing too much. Utah Fire Info said the Little Twist Fire was still about 25 percent contained on Sunday.

“Today, firefighters will continue to monitor and patrol fire lines on the north and west sides of the fire to ensure no fire escapes the perimeter,” Utah Fire Info said Sunday. “Crews are working in Rocky Canyon, near South Creek Road, using heavy equipment to construct and improve the indirect line.”

The region west of the Little Twist Fire is included in a Red flag warning issued for southwestern portions of Utah on Sunday.

Utah Fire Info said winds near the fire are expected to reach 30 miles per hour, and the Red Flag Warning is expected to remain in effect until approximately 9 p.m. Monday night.

“Little Reservoir, Tushar Lakeside and Kents Lake Campgrounds remain open to the public for camping and recreational activities,” officials said.

Smoke was expected to remain visible in surrounding areas for the next several weeks, including I-15 and I-70, as well as Hwy-89 and Hwy-20. About 254 people were deployed to fight the fire on Sunday.
