Local car show helps community connect with veterans

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – A local car show aimed to better connect the community with its veterans.

The Beckley VA Car Show was held at the Beckley VA Medical Center. There were several vendors on hand to provide services to the attendees, including the Vet Center, Archie’s Cruisers, and the Vietnam Vets of America Chapter 860, who gave away free hot dogs.

Ruann Handy, who helped organize the event, told 59News why they held this car show at the VA.

“Back in the day, years and years ago, it was kind of taboo to go to the VA. You didn’t go unless you were a veteran, and we’re working on being in the community, being seen in the community, having the community come to us and celebrating the veterans with us,” Handy said.

This car show offered free entry for cars and free entry for visitors. This event has been happening almost every year since 2018, but they missed a few years due to Covid.
