Local law enforcement agencies have announced plans to increase patrols near places of worship on Friday and Saturday as Yom Kippur celebrations get underway.

The holiday, the holiest day of the year in Judaism, begins at sunset on Friday evening and continues until nightfall on Saturday evening.

While tensions remain high in the Middle East, both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Friday they would take necessary steps to ensure people stayed safe.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is closely monitoring Jewish High Holy Days for potential threats,” LASD said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our diverse communities and encourage everyone to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially during this sacred time.”

As of Friday evening, neither department said it had learned of a credible threat.

They did not reveal information about specific deployment numbers or where exactly additional patrols would be sent.
