Local residents warned of a possible evacuation after Bear Fire burned 131 acres near Benson

Crews battled the Bear Fire in southeastern Arizona on Tuesday, burning 300 acres (131 hectares) and prompting a pre-evacuation status for nearby communities.

According to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, the fire was first reported around 3:45 p.m., burning grass and brush about 20 miles east of Benson and 21 miles south of Dragoon in the wilderness near Mount Glenn.

The fire was fanned by high winds that calmed in the evening before the National Weather Service expected another windy day on Wednesday.

Ground crews worked with three air tankers that brought water or fire retardant to the scene, officials said.

The Forestry Commission said Tuesday evening that progress has been made.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said anyone specifically within a five-mile radius of Diamondback and Bear Roads in Dragoon was under a “SET” pre-evacuation order.
