Logan Square welcomes families and visitors looking to cool off while still enjoying the outdoors

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – For the fourth day in a row, the city of Philadelphia continues to implement a Heat emergency as temperatures in our area rise.

Swann Memorial Fountain became a favorite spot for countless families trying to take a break from the hustle and bustle warm weather on Sunday.

“Try to find shade, stay hydrated and enjoy the heat,” Ashshakir Campfield said. “The sun is energy for the plants and also for us. This is how you get your vitamin D.”

Logan Square was also where volunteers from Narberth Presbyterian Church spent the afternoon distributing 90 sandwiches, dozens of cold water bottles and towels to those in need.

“It’s so ridiculously hot here, and when you don’t have access to food, housing and things like that. It’s good to be able to help,” said volunteer Linda Behmke.

In addition to those trying to help others stay cool, many people around Logan Square also found their own ways to beat the heat.

“We try to find places in the city where we can get some shade and stay cool, so this is a great place for it,” Bryan Calvet said.

Campfield and his family are visiting from Texas.

“I think we [brought] the heat,” Campfield said.

When his two daughters saw the water, they immediately went for a dip.

“We were walking and we saw this,” Campfield said. “I don’t remember this being like this before. I thought it was like, you just come in here and throw coins. I didn’t know you could come in here. So they wanted to come in, so we let them, my girls.”

Others, like the Calvet family, have chosen a nice shady spot under the trees to keep everyone cool.

“This is exactly what keeps us in Philly,” Brooke Calvet said. “The areas that can be outside, where you’re close to all the activities, but have shade.”

For now there are many take full advantage of the scorching temperatures before the expected brief respite from the heat in the coming days.
