Long Beach police rescued a hostage who was reportedly held for several hours in a home by a man suspected of opening fire near Junipero Beach earlier in the evening, authorities said.

Video shows the suspect walking out of an apartment with his arms in the air and surrendering to officers between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Thursday, more than six hours after police first responded to a report of a man allegedly shooting fired into the air.

The suspect has not been identified by police.

According to Long Beach police, officers responded to a call about shots fired in the 2000 block of East Ocean Boulevard, which runs along the beach, just before 10 p.m. When they arrived, they found the suspect and he ran to a nearby neighborhood and entered a home near Gaviota Avenue and 1st Street, about two blocks away.

Police said he had been holding a hostage in the house and was believed to be armed.

SWAT officers were called to the scene and with the help of hostage negotiators, managed to rescue the hostage and arrest the man hours later, police said.

No other details have been released by police.
