Long Island beachgoers face crowds and closures on July 4

BABYLON, NY – If you’re thinking of beating the heat at the beach for a day the 4th of july holidayyou are not alone.

People from across the Tri-State Area flock to the beaches to escape the heat and humidity.

Several beaches in our area were already full around noon.

On Long Island, Gilgo State Park and Orient Beach State Park were already full by 10 a.m. Sunken Meadow State Park was also full by noon.

Beachgoers on Long Island were advised to use Jones Beach and Heckscher State Park, where no delays have been reported so far.

Officials warned of a moderate to high risk of rip currents.

People came to Cedar Beach for a concert, fireworks and beach bonfires.

“It’s a time to relax, enjoy, read my book and celebrate America,” said Ronkonkoma resident Dawn DePasquale.

Patriotism was on display, with boats decorated in red, white and blue. On the beach there were American flag umbrellas and bathing suits.

At Tiki Joes Bar and Restaurant, preparations have been underway for tonight’s festivities for months.

“Everybody loves coming here,” said Bridget Alfano, general manager. “We have the best beach on Long Island. We have the sound right behind us.”

The beach traffic jams come as the Tri-State Area enjoys a pleasant spell of beautiful weather. Thursday brought with it higher temperatures and higher humiditywhich is expected to last for several days. Storms are possible in the late afternoon and evening hours on Thursday.
