Florida Power & Light is working to provide electric vehicle owners with more places to charge while they hit the road.
FPL’s EVolution program “makes charging along Florida’s busiest highways a breeze, with a growing number of public fast-charging stations where EV drivers can plug in and travel with confidence during the holidays,” according to a company statement.
That’s welcome news for those driving during the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays.
AAA predicts there will be nearly 120 million travelers from before Christmas through New Year’s, 107 million of them in vehicles, down from 2019’s record 108 million but well above last year’s 104.5 million.
There will also be Florida residents, more than 7.1 million, according to AAA. That is 220,000 more travelers than the previous record set last year.

How much does it cost to charge your EV at the FPL charging station?
FPL EVolution’s public fast chargers are billed at a rate of 30 cents per kilowatt hour, plus applicable taxes and fees, bringing the total cost to approximately 36 or 37 cents per kilowatt hour, depending on location.
Public Level 2 chargers are generally provided free of charge, with some exceptions, FPL said on its website.
Don’t walk away while your car is charging or you’ll be hit with extra charges
“It is proper etiquette to check your vehicle’s charge and move your vehicle once it is fully charged,” FPL said.
“FPL EVolution chargers have a 30-minute grace period. After the grace period ends, an inactivity fee will be charged for each minute the vehicle remains connected to the charger.”
How far can you go on one charge?
That depends on a number of factors, including the year and model of your vehicle, the size of the battery, the type and weight of the car, road conditions, weather conditions, driving style, whether you charge your phone or turn on the air conditioning. .
FPL said the “battery range for new models could average more than 200 miles.”
