Members of the Lubbock Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association will gather at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Lubbock County Courthouse to publicly read the county’s founding documents in preparation for the national Fourth of July holiday.

Lubbock attorney Chuck Lanehart speaks about the importance of reading the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights during the Lubbock Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association’s annual reading of the documents in 2021 at the Lubbock County Courthouse.

Similar readings of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights will take place throughout the week in 100 courthouses across the state by members of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.

The event is intended to honor Americans’ freedoms and remind them of the principles that form the foundation of democracy.

The annual event, which has been held in the Lubbock County Courthouse gazebo since 2011, will also include patriotic musical performances, said Chuck Lanehart, a Lubbock criminal defense attorney who is organizing the event.

“The organization believes the readings emphasize that July 4 is more than just a date for a summer vacation,” Lanehart said. “It’s Independence Day, the day the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776. It marked the beginning of the United States of America.”
