Lynch promises 49ers will ‘fix’ basic problems in 2025 offseason originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The 49ers have plenty of repairs to do heading into the upcoming offseason.
San Francisco’s 2024 NFL campaign did not go as planned; Missing the playoffs with a current record of 6-9 due to injuries, inconsistencies and frustrations still leaves a lot to be desired.
President of football operations and general manager John Lynch is back at the drawing board. He unveiled the 49ers’ overall approach for the 2025 offseason on Friday with KNBR’s Greg Silver and Derek Papa.
“We have to look at the root. We looked at the root causes. We will fix it,” Lynch told Silver and Papa on Friday. “We have a lot of great players and a lot of great people that we want to be part of the solution going forward, and we’re going to look for the other parts of our team to get us back to where we belong, and that is competing for championships, and I’m confident in our plan to do that.
“That’s exactly what we plan to do after we wrap up this season, which starts Monday night against Detroit [Lions].”
The 49ers have two games remaining. They will face the struggling Lions on “Monday Night Football” in Week 17 and the Arizona Cardinals in a Sunday matinee game in Week 18.
But after those games, San Francisco will be in renewal mode.
Injuries plagued the 49ers’ season, as did unpredictable tragedies and tensions. However, San Francisco – on paper – still has a star-studded roster capable of making a deep run. Additionally, Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan understand they are working against a rapidly ticking championship clock, so fans can expect an all-in quest for the franchise’s sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy over the next calendar year.
“It’s not a place we want to be again, but we will be there this year,” Lynch added. “I can’t believe we’re here, but we are. And we have to accept that. We have to learn from it. We can’t just put it down to the fact that there were a lot of injuries. Well, the team we’re with busy.” playing again [in Week 17]Detroit, they had a lot of injuries, but they found a way.
The upcoming offseason will be a now-or-never season for San Francisco. Quarterback Brock Purdy has a big contract ahead of him, injured players are returning or recovering and the roster of big names is not exactly young.
Lynch and Shanahan will certainly have a lot of ‘fixing’ to do.
