Macron seeks advice from predecessors in government crisis

French President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks with his predecessors François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday in an attempt to break the political deadlock in the country, according to media reports.

Macron also plans to meet former Socialist Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, broadcasters France Info and BFMTV reported, citing sources close to the former leaders.

Cazeneuve led the government under Hollande from December 2016 to May 2017 and could run for office again, media speculate.

A month and a half after France’s early parliamentary elections, Macron has still not named a new prime minister, and there is no prospect of a viable governing majority among the parties.

The election produced a surprise victory for the left-wing alliance Nouveau Front Populaire, ahead of Macron’s centrist forces and the far-right forces around Marine Le Pen, who had been predicted to win. Neither camp won an absolute majority.

The left-wing alliance has repeatedly made its claim to a government clear. However, Macron ruled out a pure alliance government, as it would be immediately overthrown by a vote of no confidence.

Despite several rounds of consultations between Macron and the parties, it remains unclear how a stable government can be formed in France. Coalitions are unusual in the country, making it difficult to form a government.
