French President Emmanuel Macron called the ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia an opportunity to stabilize Lebanon.
“The cessation of hostilities offers the Lebanese the opportunity, with the support of their partners, to embark on a sustainable recovery for the country,” the French leader said in a video address on X.
He called for the “immediate election” of a Lebanese president and reform of the country’s institutions so the country can recover financially.
The French president said France “will spare no effort” to support the ceasefire, and would do so with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, “in which we play a central role together with a number of partners .”
Macron emphasized that this agreement does not mean that the war in Gaza should be forgotten. He said France “will continue its efforts to bring an end to hostilities, the release of hostages, the massive influx of humanitarian aid and, of course, a just and lasting political solution involving two states.”
