Maddow Blog | Campaign overview of Wednesday, 6.26.24

Today’s episode with campaign-related news items from across the country.

* In the most expensive US House of Representatives primary in US history, incumbent Representative Jamaal Bowman lost his Democratic primary in New York yesterday. The latest voting numbers suggest the race was not particularly close.

* In Colorado, Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert’s decision to switch districts in Colorado appears to be paying off, at least for now: The right-wing incumbent easily defeated intra-party rivals in yesterday’s primaries.

* In related news, Democrats in Boebert’s former district tried to boost former state Rep. Ron Hanks by framing him as a weak general election candidate, but the efforts didn’t work: Local Republican Party primaries nominated in instead attorney Jeff Hurd.

* In Utah, Governor Spencer Cox faced a primary challenge from State Representative Phil Lyman, and although the incumbent prevailed, the fact that the challenger received more than 43% of the vote shows that the race was competitive.

* In the battle for the US Senate in Wisconsin, Republican Eric Hovde has spoken about heavier Americans paying more for health insurance – a position the Democratic senator has espoused. Tammy Baldwin‘s campaign has become one of the most effective ads of the year so far.

* Related to this, Hovde tried to talk about the meaning of Juneteenth last week. It really didn’t go well.

* Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is facing an intensifying investigation from the House Ethics Committee, but it won’t affect the Florida Democrat’s re-election chances: No Republicans filed to challenge her in the fall to perform.

* And after a closer-than-expected special congressional election, Republican Rep. Michael Rulli of Ohio was sworn in this week, giving the Republican conference a little more breathing room: Party leaders now lose up to two votes on any party-line measures, instead of one.
