Maddow Blog | Campaign Recap from Monday, 8.5.24

Today we present you campaign news from all over the country.

* We don’t yet know who Vice President Kamala Harris will choose as her running mate, but Sen. Mark Kelly posted a social media post last night that raised some eyebrows. “I spent my life in the Navy and NASA, where the mission always comes first,” the Arizona Democrat wrote. “Now my mission is to serve the people of Arizona.” The post was deleted about a half hour later.

* The latest CBS News/YouGov poll found Harris leading Donald Trump nationally, 50% to 49%. In 2024, President Joe Biden did not rank #1 for Republicans in any national CBS News/YouGov poll. (Click on the link for information on the poll’s methodology and margins of error.)

* Tomorrow there are quite a few primaries in Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington State. As always, Bolts has a helpful roundup of the races worth watching.

* The Harris campaign added several new top staffers late last week, including several prominent members of Barack Obama’s campaign teams. One of the most notable additions was David Plouffewho headed the former Democratic president’s operation in 2008.

* Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced over the weekend that a special election would be held to fill the vacancy in Congress left by the late representative. Sheila Jackson Lee will take place on November 5, at the same time as the general elections.

* As Republicans continue to support Cornel West’s far-left presidential campaign, a new complaint has been filed with the Federal Election Commission alleging illegal coordination between West’s activities and Republican-affiliated companies.

* And in Tennessee, state Rep. Gloria Johnson — a member of the so-called Tennessee Three who faced an expulsion vote last year — won a Democratic primary for U.S. Senate last week. She will face far-right Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn in the fall, and the incumbent senator is heavily favored in the race.
