Some prominent news organizations have been dealing with some unwanted drama lately. For example, as New York magazine’s Chas Danner noted this week: “Things are not going well at the Washington Post, where multiple crises have upended the newsroom in the course of a single week and put new CEO and publisher Will Lewis at the center of all problems. of them.” There has been some unrest at The Daily Beast and The Wall Street Journal.

But for those interested in media as an industry, the real shake-up has been on the right. NBC News this week highlighted the embarrassing missteps piling up among conservative media outlets.

Last year, Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems reached a $787.5 million settlement agreement in a case that produced evidence suggesting Fox promoted bogus election claims that it knew to be false to appease its audience and make money to earn.

But there are many more recent data points to consider:

  • A prominent right-wing party called Gateway Pundit, which is facing defamation lawsuits, recently filed for bankruptcy.

  • One America News Network has reached a settlement with Smartmatic, a leading voting machine company.

  • Although Fox News and Newsmax have denied any wrongdoing, both continue to face Smartmatic lawsuits, and the lawsuit continues to raise new allegations.

  • The chief financial officer of the Epoch Times was recently arrested and charged with leading a years-long scheme to launder at least $67 million in illicit funds.

  • The Right Side Broadcasting Network (RSBN) has reportedly entered into a financial deal with the Trump campaign, despite being ostensibly an independent outlet.

In case this wasn’t enough, Infowars host Alex Jones, facing brutal defamation judgments, announced plans last week to liquidate his assets. A week earlier, as the NBC News report added, “2000 Mules,” a conspiratorial election documentary popular with Trump and his followers, “was pulled by its publisher, Salem Media Group, and the company publicly apologized to a Georgia man suing author and publisher over defamation claims after being accused of voter fraud.”

That’s a long list, and there’s no reason to think the list won’t get longer.
