Maddow Blog | Friday Campaign Review, 10.4.24

Today an episode with campaign-related news items from all over the country.

* The latest national NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly leading Donald Trump among likely voters, 50% to 48%. (Click the link for information about the survey’s methodology and margin of error.)

* Harris’ campaign event in Wisconsin with Liz Cheney was quite eye-catching, and if you have twenty minutes, the former Republican congressman’s comments are worth watching in their entirety.

* As the Democratic presidential campaign continues to target persuadable Republicans, Team Harris this week launched new ads featuring Matt McCaffery, a lifelong Republican from Pennsylvania who voted for Trump in the past, explaining his support for the vice president.

* Minnesota Governor Tim Walz addressed a Muslim group called Emgage Action, and as NBC News reported, it was “the most direct pitch yet to conflicted Muslim and Arab voters” from the Democratic presidential campaign.

* New Hampshire is home to the most competitive gubernatorial race in the country, and the latest Saint Anselm College Survey Center poll showed former Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte narrowly leading former Democratic Mayor Joyce Craig, 47% to 44% . The same poll showed Harris leading Trump in the Granite State, 51% to 44%. (Click the link for information about the survey’s methodology and margin of error.)

* The New York Times reported that Republican Rep. Mike Lawler was photographed wearing blackface in 2006. The New York congressman, who faces a tough re-election campaign, told the newspaper: “I am a student of history and to anyone who is offended by the photo, I am sorry.” After the article appeared, Lawler also appeared on CNN and said he did not think the incident should be interpreted as blackface.

* George Conway’s Anti-Psychopath PAC launched a new ad this week labeling Trump as the “DEI” candidate — but instead of “diversity, equality and inclusivity,” the political action committee describes the Republican candidate as “deranged, selfish and incompetent ‘.

* At his final campaign event in Michigan, Trump “congratulated” local voters because they ‘now’ live in a border state. (Michigan has been a border state since its founding nearly 188 years ago.)

* And rock legend Bruce Springsteen released a video endorsing Harris and calling Trump “the most dangerous presidential candidate in my lifetime.”
