Maddow Blog | Mini-report from Monday, 7.1.24

Today’s quick hits.

* In Paris: “The political earthquake that France woke up to on Monday was no less seismic for perhaps being predictable. The far right won the first round of parliamentary elections after President Emmanuel Macron’s all-powerful gamble backfired. Now the centrist leader and the country’s left, reeling from historic results, sought to thwart the Rassemblement National (RN) in the decisive second round and prevent France’s first far-right government since the Nazi occupation of World War II.”

* Today’s other major ruling: “The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday opened the door for more companies to challenge years-old regulations on procedural grounds, with a 6-3 majority ruling that a North Dakota truck stop could sue the Federal Reserve over a 2011 rule that regulates debit card swipe fees.”

* Atlanta mass shooting: “Four people were killed Saturday in a suspected murder-suicide in Coweta County, Georgia, authorities said.”

* Nebraska mass shooting: “Seven people, including four children, were shot by a neighbor at a Nebraska home Friday night, authorities said, saying the crime may have been racially motivated.”

* This work in Wyoming was completed surprisingly quickly: “After three weeks of around-the-clock work, the highway over Teton Pass reopened on June 28 with a temporary detour. Work is underway to rebuild more permanently before the winter storms.”

* Menendez’s defense could begin presenting witnesses this week: “Federal prosecutors dropped their corruption case against Sen. Bob Menendez on Friday, wrapping up seven weeks of testimony as they sought to prove his role in an alleged years-long bribery scheme.”

* My condolences go out to the congressman and his family: “Rhonda Massie, the wife of Rep. Thomas Massie, died Thursday, according to a post shared by the Kentucky Republican on X. … Massie did not disclose the cause of death.”

See you tomorrow.
