Today’s episode with campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In the final national poll in the presidential race, the final ABC News/Ipsos poll showed Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump by 4 points, 51% to 47%; the latest CBS News/YouGov poll shows the Democratic vice president up one point, from 50% to 49%; and the latest CNN poll showed the major party nominees with equal support of 47% each. (Click on the links for additional information about the surveys’ methodologies and margins of error.)
* In the surprisingly interesting battle for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska, the latest New York Times/Siena College poll showed incumbent Republican Sen. Deb Fischer’s lead over independent Dan Osborn falling to just 2 points, 48% to 46 %. (Click the link for additional information about the survey’s methodology and margin of error.)
* In the U.S. Senate race in Texas, incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has edged Democratic Rep., according to the latest New York Times/Siena College poll. Colin Allred led 50% to 46%.
* The Trump campaign aired a two-minute ad during the Philadelphia Eagles’ final game, claiming to show evidence that the United States has “gone to hell” over the past four years. However, as Politico noted, the ad featured images from 2020 — when Trump was president.
*If you missed former first lady Michelle Obama’s speech in Michigan on Saturday, do yourself a favor, take 40 minutes and watch the whole thing.
* In Wisconsin, a super PAC closely tied to Republican politics last week invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of Jill Stein’s Green Party presidential candidacy.
* On Friday, North Carolina Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance praised right-wing gubernatorial hopeful Mark Robinson, calling him “a great lieutenant governor.” Hours later, Barack Obama had a little fun at Robinson’s expense, telling a crowd, “I don’t know where to start with this guy.” He called the civil rights movement “nonsense.” Calling LGBTQ people “trash.” Self-identified as a ‘Nazi.’ Suggested bringing back slavery. Now I shouldn’t really go into this. I think it’s fair to say you don’t need a governor who makes Donald Trump look almost normal.”
* In 2022, the editors of The New York Post, referring to January 6, told readers that Trump “has proven himself unworthy to be the CEO of this country again.” Two years later, editors of the Murdoch-owned newspaper supported the former president’s bid for a second term.
* In Wisconsin, Republican Sen. hopeful Eric Hovde has launched a highly misleading attack ad targeting Sen. Tammy Baldwin, who is eager to remind voters that the Democratic incumbent is a lesbian. Twelve years ago, Baldwin became the country’s first openly gay senator.
* Relatedly, Trump has started calling CNN’s Anderson Cooper “Allison Cooper” as part of an apparent reference to Cooper’s sexuality. In 2016, then-candidate Trump told LGBTQ voters, “I will fight for you.” Those days are apparently over.
