Maddow Blog | Thursday’s Campaign Summary, 10.17.24: Polls show Harris with a lead in NC

Today’s episode with campaign-related news items from across the country.

* For the third time this week, a Georgia court has rejected new election administration rules imposed by Republicans on state elections. In the latest case, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thomas Cox described seven new policies as “illegal, unconstitutional and void.”

* Speaking of election-related court rulings, NBC News reported that a federal district court in Alabama “temporarily blocked Alabama’s voter purge program, which has flagged thousands of registered voters and charged them with illegally registering in the state.”

* While the latest national polls show Donald Trump trailing or tied behind Kamala Harris, the latest Fox News poll shows the Republican narrowly ahead, 50% to 48%. However, the same survey showed the Democratic vice president leading among voters from the seven major battleground states. (Click the link for additional information about the survey’s methodology and margin of error.)

* In related news, Quinnipiac’s latest poll shows former President Harris leading in Georgia, 52% to 45%, while Quinnipiac also finds Democratic candidate Trump leading in North Carolina, 49% to 47%. (Click on the links for additional information about the surveys’ methodologies and margins of error.)

* Speaking of the Tar Heel State, the same Quinnipiac poll looked at the state’s gubernatorial race and found Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein ahead of Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, 52% to 40%. (Click the link for additional information about the survey’s methodology and margin of error.)

* Harris held an interesting campaign event in Pennsylvania, where she appeared alongside a host of Republicans, and The New York Times described it as “her most direct and comprehensive pitch yet to conservative and moderate voters.”

* Former House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney managed Harris and Democratic Rep.’s Senate campaign. Colin Allred has already been supported in Texas, and now the Republican from Wyoming is also supporting two Democratic candidates for the US House of Representatives: Susan Wild of Pennsylvania and John Avlon of New York.

* During the closely watched battle for the US Senate in Montana, Republican Tim Sheehy said that if Democrats have a majority in the House next year and Donald Trump becomes president, they will impeach him “immediately”. What Sheehy apparently doesn’t know — but really should know — is that the Senate has no impeachment power and cannot remove presidents even if a majority of its members wanted to.
