Britain’s Poppy Maskill claimed her third gold medal at the Paris Paralympic Games by winning the women’s 100m backstroke S14.

The 19-year-old Maskill continued her stellar performances at the Games by adding to the two gold and two silver medals she had won earlier at the Games.

Halfway through the race she was behind Valeriia Shabalina, but she fought back to win in a time of 1 minute and 5.74 seconds, while her compatriot Olivia Newman-Baronius took bronze.

Maskill’s victory takes ParalympicsGB to 41 gold medals in Paris, equalling the team’s total from three years ago in Tokyo.

“I was a little annoyed because it wasn’t a personal best, but it was still gold so I can’t be too annoyed,” said Maskell.

“Of course I’m happy with my medals because it’s a great achievement, but I’m also a little disappointed with my time because I know I can do better.”

With her five medals, Maskell has won the most medals of any British Paralympic athlete.

“I thought it would be Alice [Tai] or someone else. It feels great,” she said.

The gold medal came after Maskill took first place in the 100m S14 butterfly and the mixed 4x100m S14 freestyle relay.

Maskill also won silver in the 200m freestyle S14 and the 200m medley S14.

Earlier, 17-year-old Mark Tompsett won bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke (S14), while Maisie Summers-Newton added bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle (S6) to the two gold medals she had won earlier in Paris.
