An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck the southeast coast of Hawaii Island today at 1:43 p.m.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered about 9 miles (15 kilometers) east-southeast of Naalehu and about 35 miles (57 kilometers) south-southwest of Hilo at a depth of 37 miles below sea level.

Scientists at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the earthquake had no apparent impact on the Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes.

“This earthquake is part of the seismic swarm beneath the Pahala area, which has been going on since 2019,” they said in a web post about the earthquake. “Earthquakes in this region have been observed as far back as the 1960s.”

Based on the earthquake intensity, no damage to buildings or infrastructure was expected, according to HVO.
