Jan. 11—Maine State Police responded to more than 50 crashes and slide-offs Saturday after southern Maine woke up to some light snowfall.
Police responded to several crashes on the Maine Turnpike (Interstate 95) and Interstate 295 south of Augusta, state police said in a Facebook post posted around 10 a.m. Saturday.
Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said more than 50 crashes had been reported on the turnpike and I-295 by early Saturday afternoon.
“The Turnpike has seen 24 crashes and slides, primarily between Kittery and Falmouth, with a higher concentration in Saco,” Moss wrote in an email. “About 30 accidents and slides have occurred on the highway, including in the Falmouth area, but now in Lincoln and northbound.”
Moss said there were no injuries in any of the crashes.
“So far, it appears that visibility and driving too fast for road conditions are the causative factors,” Moss said.
State police reminded motorists in a Facebook post to use caution, especially during snowy conditions.
“Please drive with extra caution and give yourself plenty of space between you and the other vehicles on the roadway,” the post said. “Give the MDOT and Turnpike crews extra attention and space to do their work and clear the roadway. Drive slowly, plan for the extra time to get to your destination, and be safe.”
