MAINZ, Germany — Police are investigating an explosion in the center of Cologne in western Germany on Monday.

The explosion occurred at the entrance to the Vanity nightclub in the Hohenzollernring area, one of Cologne’s main nightlife spots, around 5:50 a.m. local time, a police spokesman told NBC News.

According to police, at least one person may have been slightly injured in the incident.

According to the spokesperson, several glass windows were shattered in the explosion, “and more people could likely have been injured if the explosion had occurred later.”

Local authorities reported in a message on X on Monday that a “major” police operation was underway and urged residents to avoid the area around the Hohenzollernring.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

Police told NBC News that the area is under surveillance and that the footage is part of the ongoing investigation.
