CHICAGO (CBS) — A man died Thursday morning after a fire at an apartment in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood.
Chicago police said the victim, believed to be in his 60s, was found unconscious just after 4 a.m. in a fire at the apartment building in the 4500 block of South Francisco Avenue.
He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died.
There were no further injuries, but four people were displaced as a result of the fire.
Resident Samuel Garcia said the fire started in the apartment’s basement. He said the man who died in the fire was the owner of the building.
“I woke up and saw the smoke, and I called the police, and that was it,” he said.
Garcia and other people were seen taking bags containing their belongings from the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
