Man convicted of murder after stealing gun, shooting homeowner in North Highlands

A Sacramento Superior Court jury has found a man guilty of first-degree murder in the gunshot death of a North Highlands resident two years ago when the burglar fled with guns he stole from the man’s backyard shed, prosecutors said.

In addition to the murder charge, the jury on Thursday also found Kailin Deshai Harris, 29, guilty of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced in a news release Monday.

Authorities said Gennadiy Ivanovich Mironov, 62, was struck by gunfire during the Jan. 17, 2022, shooting at his home on Greenlawn Way in North Highlands. Mironov died hours later at a hospital.

Prosecutors say Harris was tampering with vehicles near Mironov’s home and stealing items from the vehicles. Harris entered Mironov’s backyard around 5:30 a.m. that morning, went into a shed and stole multiple weapons.

Mironov was awakened by a notification from a Ring camera. He confronted Harris as the suspect fled with the stolen weapons, the prosecution said.

Prosecutors say Harris then shot Mironov twice before fleeing the home.

Harris was arrested a week later after officers executed a warrant at a home in North Sacramento. Harris has been in the Sacramento County Main Jail ever since.

Prosecutors said Harris faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. A sentencing hearing for Harris is scheduled for Sept. 26.
