Eight-time World Rally Championship winner Sébastien Ogier was involved in a crash during preparation for the Rally Poland race last week, and one of the occupants of the other vehicle has since died. The crash, which occurred in the village of Wlosty, Poland, involved Ogier and co-pilot Vincent Landais in what appears to be a Toyota GR Yaris, and a Skoda with a 69-year-old man and a 67-year-old passenger inside. The 69-year-old Polish man died less than a week after the crash, according to a statement from Wlosty police.

Ogier and the 69-year-old Polish man were taken from the scene by helicopter, while Landais and the 67-year-old passenger were taken by ambulance, Wlosty police said. After an initial examination by doctors at the hospital, the 69-year-old man was released without serious injuries, but died a few days later.

Wlosty police spokeswoman Marta Domanska said an autopsy would be conducted Tuesday to determine whether the death was related to the crash, AP reported (via The Canadian Press).

“As the weather was extremely hot on Sunday and several days have passed since the crash, we do not know if the two events can be linked. An autopsy is expected to provide a definitive answer,” Domanska said.

After the accident, all four people involved complained of pain, but were conscious. Although no one has been charged yet, an expert in road traffic accident investigations is involved, who will issue a ruling after further investigation. Ogier and Landais competed under the official name Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT and withdrew from the Rally of Poland after the crash.

“The incident occurred while Ogier and Landais were preparing for the Goldap special stage, which forms the SS10 and SS14 of this Saturday’s rally. Ogier and Landais were driving a road car, as is customary for rally reconnaissance,” a statement from Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT regarding X read. “All reconnaissance vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking, which shows that the speeds were within the stated limits. All involved have undergone scans that showed no serious injuries.”
