A man was killed Friday night when he was hit on the 134 Freeway in Glendale, police said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 11:40 p.m., when a stopped car in the center eastbound lane of the freeway was struck from behind by another vehicle.

“The silver Mitsubishi stopped in Lane 2 for an unknown reason and the right front passenger … exited the vehicle,” the CHP statement said.

According to officers, the second car, a black Mazda, was also traveling in lane 2, “in excess of 65 mph in light traffic,” rear-ending the Mitsubishi.

After the Mazda collided with the car, it also hit the passenger who had gotten out of the other car earlier and was still standing outside in the road, according to police.

The passenger, identified as 24-year-old Jake Huard, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the driver of the Mitsubishi, a 19-year-old Pasadena woman, was seriously injured in the crash because she was not wearing a seat belt.

The 22-year-old driver of the Mazda, a 22-year-old man from El Monte, suffered minor injuries.

According to the CHP, all eastbound lanes were closed until about 7 a.m. Saturday.
