Man faces felony charges after running over Milton police officer

We’re learning more about the man accused of running over a Milton police officer Wednesday morning while trying to evade arrest.

Prosecutors say 32-year-old Jory Nelson tried to sell drugs in a parking lot at the King and Pierce County line. According to charging documents, police received a tip about Nelson’s sale and took the step to make an arrest.

Police say after Officers Erik Haney and Jacob Wilcox made contact with Nelson, he attempted to drive away. In the process, Nelson ran over Haney, breaking his leg and causing other serious life-threatening injuries.

“He showed clear contempt by running off with an officer who was still partially seated in his vehicle and then running him over poses a significant risk,” said an attorney with the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office.

Nelson is facing multiple charges, including vehicular assault, hit and run, attempting to elude police and possession with intent to distribute. Nelson’s bond has been set at $200,000 and he remains in the Pierce County Jail.

KIRO7 asked Milton Police Chief Tony Hernandez for an update on Haney’s condition. Chief Hernandez says Haney experienced some pain early Thursday morning, but he is still expected to be doing well and make a full recovery. He says people have been coming by the station all day with flowers, cards and even food to help Haney’s family.

“One gentleman came in almost in tears and said he wanted me to pass on the accolades, wished him well and said he would pray for him,” Hernandez said.

The community is also trying to help the Haney family. Erik Mickelson of Northwest Custom Apparel makes shirts and sells them for $30. He says all proceeds will go toward direct assistance to the family or the Milton Police Department.

“The police don’t make that much money. And I never met the man, but I know I had to take care of him because he’s part of the Milton Police family.
