Man fatally stabbed in Cottage Grove, suspect released after morning altercation

A man has died after he was stabbed by an unknown suspect early Monday morning at 2900 Row River Road in Cottage Grove, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said.

Cottage Grove police officers responded to an alleged dispute in the area around 1 a.m., where they found a man suffering from stab wounds, the sheriff’s office said. He later died at the scene.

Investigators said they had identified a suspect, but as of Monday afternoon, he had still not been found.

The sheriff’s office had not released the identity of the deceased man as of Monday afternoon. The dispute appears to have occurred near a field and several car dealerships in the area, police said.

Investigators are confident this was an isolated incident.

Sgt. Tim Wallace, spokesman for the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, told The Register-Guard that investigators do not have a description of the suspect at this time.

At the request of Cottage Grove PD, the sheriff’s office took over the investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Lane County Sheriff’s Dispatch at 541-682-4141 and quote case number 24-4987.
